Chapter 9, Mission Logg 001/Compte rendu de mission 001

After searching for Matthiew for about a month, the ZI force let it go. It served no purpose to search for a dead man anyway. And since he had finished basic training and was not a menace for society, the high commanders decided that they would not pursue him anymore. It was hard on Parkson and Thompson who had started to like the guy. But duty called. The ZI Force had received a request from both Palestine and Israel to help them with a zombie infestation that was starting in the demilitarized zone. Some extremist from both groups pretended that it was God/Allah’s will and divine punishment but the governments new that zombies dint have religious preferences. As long as it was human, alive and in their mouth, they were happy. So they had been deployed and had started a standard search and destroy mission. They were in 5 man cells: 3 sentient zombies and 2 humans.
For the last 3 days, they had searched and searched throughout the dry lands and abandoned houses. Thompson, Parkson, RedTail and 2 others were getting tired of this game off hide and seek.
- You know what I hate about sand? Asked RedTail
- No what lad?
- It gets everywhere…
They all laughed. The joke was stupid but they needed the relief. The zombies were fine in this weather, they did not sweat, the dry air was good for their body and they did not feel the cold nor the need for sleep. Their human partners on the other hand needed to drink regularly and need shelter during day time and warmth during the night. The zombies were more than glad to carry supplies for their friends but the waiting was getting…the radio clicked on and a calm voice spoke: “To all units, this is Commander Neilson. A group of Z’s has been spotted in region 34-B. Their number is approximately 12. Unit 3 and unit 6 will go as support. Other units will keep their post until we are certain that there are not more than these one. Neilson out.”
- Ach! That’s not our number. Damned! I wanted to slash and mash some Z’s.
- Don’t worry big guy, answered RedTail, you’ll have your chance.
- And sooner than you thought. Hear that? That’s sound like at least 20 Z’s coming this way! Said Parkson. Smith call the commander, Brown, get in position. Let’s get moving guy’s they are coming!
Parkson took the Canadian C7 riffle and made certain that everything was ready and in order. She took her two kukris, checked the blades integrity and the edges and finally, a short roman style sword. Then, she placed her riffle on single shot and took her position at the front of the formation. Thompson preferred a bolt action sniper gun of high caliber. He had is trusted Claymore sword and the Scottish Sgian Dubh, a dirk. RedTail had a heavily modified crossbow with automatic action and a clip holding 25 bolts. It made for a cumbersome weapon but in his hands, it was deadly. He had an old looking tomahawk with the stone head and a bone knife. Smith and Brown had the standard ZI weaponry: C7 or M16 riffle, a side arm and a machete. They did not see the need for personal weapons.
Parkson was at the front of the formation. Smith and Brown were on the side and RedTail was the rear. Thompson had found a vantage point from where he would start snipping Z’s head until they were all dead or to close to them. He would then join the other at the front. Smith was calling the news while they were waiting for the Z’s to be in firing range: almost every unit were engaged in combat. There were over 300 Z’s at the last count. The biggest group of them were attacking the commander position. That brought a smile on everyone’s face. THAT was one battle that would end fast. The orders were that every unit had to fend for themselves and when they had annihilated their threat, go and support the nearest unit.
Parkson was searching for the Z’s with her binocular when she started cursing.
- Hey lass, what’s wrong? Asked Thompson worried. Parkson was NOT the type to lose her cool in a fight.
- We are up against children.
That was bad news. Z’s were hard to kill as they were. Anywhere else than the brain and they were up and moving again in a matter of instants. That’s why no one had Gatling guns or fully automatic. You dint want to leave a body cut in half, hiding there to start an infection again in a matter of days. But the problem with children’s was that they were small, thus harder to head shoot. And, they were children. No one liked to smash a child’s head even though he was a zombie. That called for a change of plan. Smith and RedTail were placed in the center of a 3 man formation. Brown, Thompson and Parkson took the points with their blades. The 2 humans would shoot the children…no better to think of them as Z’s, they would shoot the Z’s from the center of the formation and the other 3 would chop off anyone who got to close. Then, Parkson gasped: “oh shit, they are at least 50 of them! There are toddlers among them! WHY! WHY!!!!!!”
- PARKSON! Get a grip! It’s not the first time we had to do this and it won’t be the last! Put these binoculars down and get ready to fight!
- Yes sir, sorry sir.
Thompson kept starring at her until he was certain that she had her emotions under controls than Smith and RedTail started firing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Neilson out. »
- Ach!
Pourquoi!!! POURQUOI!!!!!!! »
- PARKSON!
