Chapitre 13 Mother Russia/ La mère Russie

*Note from the author: Hello, I could not find more references about the landscape of the one in Russia I choose. So, there might and will be disparency between this work of fiction and the reality. Sorry*
When Parkson and Thompson got out of the plane, they were greeted by 4 units of Spetsnaz, the elite Russian force. The whole ZI force was guided by these guys who did not looked to happy to have so many foreigners on their land. But orders were orders. And soon, everyone was seated in a hangar waiting for something to happen. A small man finally took his place on the stage and started talking to the troops in flawless English.
“Good day to you all, in the name of Russia, we welcome you and are grateful for your help in our time of need.” A picture appeared on the screen behind him. It showed a small village near a lake. It had about 200 houses, 1 school and on an island on the lake, a church. “This is Vladimirovka and its lake. The Konevsky Monastery is isolated and the whole region is not vastly populated. 2 years ago, people started to disappear when spring came. It lasted until late autumn and never during winter. 1 week ago, a monk reported seeing a man walking under the water and holding a leg on which he was munching. The man never came out of the water. The monks, superstitious tried to exorcise the “demon” from the water to no avail. They lost 5 of their members to the “demons”. Finally, they asked for help. We sent 2 whole units and have confirmed it: there are zombies in the lake. How many? Well, if you count the people that have disappeared in the last 2 years plus the one we don’t know about, we would guess around 35 of them. Now, you might wonder why ask for the whole force just for 35 zombies? The disappearances have started to occur farther inland. What we need is for you to do a full and total sweep of the area which spawns 40 km2. And of course, the cleaning of the lake. Unlike so many years ago, we did not send units to fight an opponent they are not equipped nor trained to fight. That’s where you come in. You have roughly 2 months to achieve this before it gets too cold to work. In 6 hours, you will be transferred on location. There you will have the full cooperation of the 4 Spetsnaz units who will be under your command. They don’t like this at all but they will obey their orders. They will also serve as liaison between your force and our government. We have removed all inhabitants and monks from the place. Try to keep our historical heritage intact. The monastery is quite old and we would like to have it intact when you have cleansed the infection. For more information, please report to your commanding officers. That will be all. Good hunting.” With that, the man stepped down and left the room.
Thompson and Parkson exchanged a look. This was going to be one hell of a mission. The Spetsnaz were the best in Russia, no question asked. But they had the ego that goes with the title. Same thing with the green Berets, the SEALS and all the other groups in the world. Of course, everyone knew that the ZI force WAS the best. But only at hunting zombies. They never fought civilians. So their techniques were mostly centered against swarms, hostile urban fighting, jungle, forest, desert and such but always and at all time centered against zombies. The Z’s did not change their strategy, did not think and could not be scared. That changed a lot from your standard military tactics. How would they get along with the Spetsnaz? Good they hoped.
The force was moved in another hangar where camp beds had been placed. Everyone took a well deserved meal and slept as much as they could. Except for Thompson and Parkson who were suddenly surrounded by dozen of their teammate asking embarrassing questions such as: “How did you know we would fight underwater?” or “That’s why you trained so hard for the cold? But how did you know about this?”. They evade the questions the best they could and finally went to sleep. On the morrow, they embarked in a convoy that moved them to their location. It took 1 week to get there. Once on site, they were relieved to see that barracks had been erected and that everything they would need was provided. The Spetsnaz were polite and worked extremely well as expected. They set camps and started to plan the mission. Each unit would have 2 Spetsnaz with them under the direct order to obey the chain of command of the Zi force.
Things started slowly for Thompson and Parkson. They were in the same unit as usual but had 3 new people with them; 1 to replace their lost member during the last mission, 2 to bring their numbers to 7 and of course, the 2 Spetsnaz. The first one called himself Vladimir and the second Sasha. They would not give another name but otherwise were efficient, silent and worked well in the team. After a week of searching the country side, they became a permanent addition to the unit. They trained with them, ate with them and things went smoothly. The Spetsnaz thought them a few new tricks while Parkson instructed them on the finer points of hunting zombies. Their only weak point was that they had to unlearn to shoot. Aiming for the head every single time was hard to them. They started practicing using a metronome and shooting at every bip aiming only for 1 point of their target: the head. Every Spetsnaz had to go through this harsh training but they went at it with their expected efficiency and after 2 weeks, they were as good as any Zi members. That’s when they had their first Z sighting.
It occurred during one afternoon after nearly 1 month of nothing but searching through the bushes and other hiding places for Z’s. A call was received and transferred to all units: 5 Z’s had been spotted 10 km south east of the camp position. They had been destroyed by the unit on place. The higher up then put the base in a state of permanent alert expecting the Z’s to get to them since they were the only source of food anywhere around. And they were right. Shortly after, every unit send in the woods surrounding the base encountered 1 or 2 Z’s, sometime as much as 10.
Then, when it became obvious that no more Z’s were coming from the land, all eyes turned toward the lake. Early on, they had fenced the lake and searched for its source but they were underwater and not from a river nearby. So THAT had become a problem. Now, they were ready to mount their first underwater Search and Destroy mission. Thompson’s unit was set on the bank of the lake as support which made Parkson quite happy. She did not fancy going there in the water to fight off zombies.
The first units to go in there did not find anything. They search for 4 hours at the time and made a schedule so everyone would have their turn in going in. When it was Parkson’s time, it went smoothly and she was quite happy with herself. On the second week of underwater searching the sonar’s picked something. At least 12 Z’s were coming toward them. It was time to get thing started. 2 units went underwater and started to destroy the Zombies. They used a high velocity dart that had a gas cell in it which exploded once it hit the skull. It had 1 weakness: it created debris that slowly reduced the vision of the divers. They had to try to get them before they were to close or they would have to retreat. And underwater, you couldn’t tell if a zombie was near of far unless it had its troth intact. They groaned even underwater. Which was unnerving even for the most experienced divers in the force. That’s why whenever contact was made, only the most experienced of the units would actually go in there and fight. Especially in lakes since the water was usually murky and hard to see through.
The first 2 units were reporting 12 Z’s dead when a call was issued to all units: “Get out of the water, retreat behind the fences. All units MUST be in underwater fighting armour. This is not a drill.”
Thompson and Parkson exchanged a look: Oh crap...
