Matthiew knew he had been sick. Really sick. Even though his memories were hazy, some parcel of conversations had stuck in his mind. Someone, probably a nurse saying: “He’s turning!!! He’s turning!!! We have to call the ZI Force! ” And the doctor telling her off with an inexpressive voice: “You know the protocol. Keep an eye on his brain waves and let me handle the ZI force”. He remembered a hunger and a thirst unlike any he had ever known and the sweetest drink he had ever drunk in his live.
Mat, his eyes still closed analyzed the situation: whatever he had had, it was over. He felt quite good compared to before. But the drugs they had ministered him were quite something because he could not feel his body very well. He opened his eyes and looked around. He was in an hospital of some sort. When he tried to lift his head and really take a good look, he realized that his head was restrained as was the rest of his body.
Just when he was starting to panic, he heard the same detached voice talking to him: “Well Mr. Andrews, I see that you have regained conscience. That is good. Now, before anything else, you must know that you have been really ill. You are better now, but you are still a danger to yourself and especially to other. I do not wish to alarm you but you have become the carrier of a very contagious disease. There is one absolute rule that you must obey at all time: do not bite. Whatever the reason, the feeling, you-must-not-bite. Now, if you understand, try to squeeze the sensor bar in your right hand. You might have some troubles at first. It is normal and a condition of your sickness.
Mat, feeling quite pissed-off, squeezed as hard as he could. He heard a loud cracking sound and the voice of the doctor again: “Now now Mr. Andrews, there is no need to be angry. You have been sick and you must learn to live with it. Now, let’s try again and this time try not to destroy it. These sensor bars are quite costly.” A new bar was placed in his hand and this time, Mat tried to do it gently. There was no point in arguing since he was restrained anyway. After what seemed like hours, a faint “click” was heard and the Dr. seamed pleased.
“Excellent Mr. Andrews, now, I will bring a glass to your lips, remember: do not bite.”
Mat accepted the drink without protest and soon fell asleep again. A deep dreamless sleep.

Matthiew savait qu’il avait été malade. Gravement malade.

Chapter 1: The Infected
Matthiew Andrews was jogging on his favorite track in the Memorial Park. His rhythm was good and so was his music. Being a charted accountant, he was thinking about his day and a difficult issue he had with one of his project when he saw the man lying on the ground.
Matthiew stooped running and stood there looking at the man. Half his right leg was missing, his cloth were thorn and blood covered his t-shirt. Maybe a bear had mauled him. Convinced the man was dead, Mat took his cell phone, starting to call 911 hen the man moved. Without even thinking, Mat was beside him and moving him on his back. What he saw was so horrible that his body moved before he had fully registered the vision of horror facing him: the head was almost entirely gone. His left eye was hanging by the optical nerve, the nose had been half bitten and his throat was a gaping wound. But this...thing was alive! Its hand had reached to grasp him when he had jumped back.
The sudden movement had dislodged his earplugs and Mat was now able to ear moaning all around him. Turning in a fast circle, he was faced with a vision straight taken from a George R. Romero movie: 5 corps were moving toward him, shuffling, groaning, reaching and maws biting in anticipation of his flesh.
Mat, the adrenalin kicking in, started to run when searing pain gripped his left calf. Looking down with panic, he saw that the first...thing had bitten him! He kicked it with his free leg but lost his balance, falling on the ground and hitting his head hard.
When his dizziness had passed, Mat was faced with death. The thing had crawled over his body and his destroyed face was inch from his own. He closed his eyes and screamed in terror when the weight pinning him on the ground was lifted. The last thing he saw before passing out was a man with a trench coat snapping the neck of the thing and casually throwing it away.
